Stop motion in the moment

How can we find and tell stories when connection is fleeting? With a team of Terrapin folk, I’ve just wrapped up a seven week unmapped exploration at the Migrant Resource Centre’s Youth Drop-in program, seeking to develop a way of working and a relationship that can grow in the coming years.

Young recent arrivals to Tasmania can come to the MRC for support, help with navigating the mazes of daily life, and to make friends and socialise. For a few short hours each week we found ourselves adapting on the fly to find ways of telling stories together, using drawing, movement, stop-motion animation, and interviews. The question we began with – how could Terrapin contribute to addressing the experience of daily racism on the island? – quickly answered itself: by celebrating these fantastic young people and the universal things they love and hope for.
